Lucid dream inspired perspective drawing of ancient Chinese street scene with crowds of people praising an otherworldly large atlas beetle larva amongst asian architecture. An entire mythology has evolved from this one image. Each stage in the beetle's metamorphosis is marked by cultural eras and empires.
Story:
Perhaps you’ve seen this image before? Not in your waking life, but in the subconscious dream realm. Where thoughts mingle with alternate realities. That was the case for Vincent Fink. This piece came to the artist in a lucid dream where he saw the finished drawing. He forced himself to remember it so it could be recreated in his waking life.
After several months he completed the first masterpiece in what would become his most enduring series. The large 33” tall 48” wide panel covered in sumi ink, pigment lines, and brush pen marks meticulously depicts an ancient Chinese street scene with hundreds of people crowded around a celebration. There seems to be a parade with many people underneath an enormous palanquin (a litter or carriage) that is housing the giant beetle larva. Imagery of metamorphosis mythology is on everything as part of the culture. The town loves Lord Worm.
But there seems to be some kind of conspiracy unfolding beneath the surface of this drawing. Some of the people carrying the large larva look miserable. Others are creeping around corners looking suspicious. The crowd is oblivious to any danger around them. They are as if at an amusement park, mesmerized by the fanfare.
Will Lord Worm make it to his next stage or will his empire collapse?
